The lesson is simple: every creative decision should serve the story.

Recently, I filmed a short promotional video for my wife’s upcoming leadership conference. As I usually do, I used a lavalier microphone and positioned it so it wouldn’t distract from the speaker. That detail matters to me because good production should support the message, not pull attention away from it.

The lighting was simple and intentional. The message was short and focused. My wife is very good at communicating clearly—she studied media in college, so she knows how to pull out the most important points and deliver them with confidence on camera.

After filming, I decided to grade the piece in black and white. I wanted it to feel dramatic, but not overly dramatic. The goal was to remove some of the visual distractions and keep the viewer’s attention on the subject and the story.

The sound was clean, the presentation was strong, and the message stayed focused. We received a lot of positive comments about the video, and I believe part of the reason it connected was because every production choice supported the story.

That experience reminded me of something important: good production is not about making something look expensive or overly polished. It is about making intentional choices that help the audience focus on what matters.

Sometimes the best production decisions are the ones the viewer never consciously notices. Good sound, thoughtful lighting, strong framing, and the right visual treatment can remove distractions and allow the person, the message, and the story to come through clearly.

The lesson is simple: every creative decision should serve the story.

Intentional Production—why sound, lighting, framing, color, and presentation should all have a reason behind them.

“Good Production Removes Distractions.”
